How to Choose a Web Development Company: A Buyer's Checklist
A checklist for choosing a web or software development company: scope, team, process, pricing, code ownership, communication and warning signs.
The short answer
Pick a company that shows relevant work you can verify, explains its process and pricing clearly, gives you a written scope before it starts, hands the code over to you and talks to you at times that suit you. Compare two or three companies on the same written brief, not on price alone.
Step 1: Write a one-page brief
Describe your business goal, who the users are, the pages or features you need, any tools it must connect to, your deadline and a rough budget range. A clear brief lets companies quote accurately. It also shows you who asks good questions back.
Step 2: Check their experience
Ask for examples similar to your project and for references you can call. Open live sites on your phone, not just screenshots. Be careful with portfolios you cannot verify, and with companies that claim to be equally good at every technology.
Step 3: Find out who will build it
Ask who the project lead is, which developers will work on your project and whether they are employees or freelancers. Meet the lead before you sign. A named lead matters more than a long list of services.
Step 4: Compare pricing models, not just prices
A fixed price suits a clear scope. A dedicated team suits a product you keep building. A monthly retainer suits maintenance and improvements. Ask what is not included: revisions, hosting, paid licences, content, taxes and support after launch.
Step 5: Own your code and accounts
You should own the source code, designs, domain, hosting and cloud accounts. Ask for the code to be in your account, with documentation and a clear handover. Avoid agreements that lock your site to the vendor.
Step 6: Look at process and communication
Good teams work in short sprints with weekly demos, a shared task board and written updates. Agree working hours, reply times and one point of contact before the project starts.
Step 7: Ask about testing and support
Ask how they test, how they handle security, how fast your site will load on a mid-range phone and who fixes defects after launch. A warranty period and an option for support after launch are signs of a mature team.
Step 8: Plan for after launch
Sites and apps need updates, monitoring and improvements. Ask what maintenance costs, what reply times apply and whether the company will support a site it did not build.
Warning signs
A price far below every other quote. No written scope. Pressure to pay everything upfront. No references. Unclear ownership of the code. No named project lead. Promises of guaranteed rankings or instant results.
